CandyTaking a new direction ……

Hello! And welcome to my website.

If you’ve read any of my previous books, you already know I adore writing about the funny side of love. But we all come to various crossroads in our lives when we realize it’s time to take a different path and head out in a new direction.

Last year, I found myself standing at one of those crossroads.

I guess you could say after eight back-to-back romantic comedies, my funny bone was (ahem) fully satiated in every sense of the word. That was the only explanation I had for why I couldn’t get excited about coming up with another humorous premise for a new book.

So there I stood (mentally, of course,) looking down the untraveled road to the left, yet knowing the safest thing for me would be staying on the straight and narrow romantic comedy road on the right.

And this is where it gets weird.

Woo-woo kind of weird, if you know what I mean.

I’d been listening to my favorite pop station on the radio while I sat there staring at the blank screen on my computer – unable to come up with a single freaking funny idea – and with my mind wandering right up to that crossroads I mentioned earlier. And suddenly Beyonce sang out loud and clear “To the left, to the left….”

I’m serious!

And okay, I know it’s hokey, but I took those words as a sign.

And yes, I also know that makes no sense whatsoever. Beyonce has no idea I even exist, and the song “Irreplaceable” is about dumping her boyfriend NOT about me changing directions in my writing career.

It didn’t matter.

I’ve always been one of those superstitious people who look for a sign when I’m sitting on the fence about something. And crazy or not, “to the left, to the left” was the sign I needed to take my first step toward getting in touch with my more serious side.

Now this is the part where I’ll fast forward past the scary stuff – the immediate self-doubt, the down-to-the-quick nail biting, the continuous banging my head against the wall while I waited to see if I could even sell a traditional romance since all I’d ever sold before was romantic comedy.

I also won’t bore you with the embarrassing details of how once my agent sent my traditional romance to an editor, I whined and moaned and groaned to my family and my friends about how idiot me had just single-handedly ruined my own writing career – forever.

Instead, I’ll just skip to the good news – about how I screamed and did a wicked little cha-cha-cha around my office when I finally got the e-mail from my agent saying I’d received an offer from Harlequin SuperRomance.

I simply couldn’t believe it.

SuperRomance wanted my unfunny book.

I was beside myself THRILLED!

And no, I haven’t abandoned romantic comedy; our paths will definitely cross again. But what has me so excited about writing for SuperRomance is the freedom to be funny, or not, or somewhere in between.

So for those romantic comedy fans out there, humor me, please – (no pun intended.) I hope you’ll take this new journey with me along the SuperRomance path looking for stories about love regardless of where the road takes me.

After all, the wonderful thing about any romance is that all roads in romance eventually lead us to that final destination we call crave – happily ever after.

Thanks so much for stopping by to visit!
